The Vault it Open! Champagne Sélection by Bernard Lonclas | NV
Founded in 1976, Bernard Lonclas is an unassuming Champagne house located beyond Épernay in the village of Bassuet. When you look at a map of Champagne and its main sub-regions, it's way "off the beaten path," far-out to the east in a super sub-section of the Côte des Blancs called, "Vitryat." Abundant with limestone, this is mainly Chardonnay territory, but bits of sand and clay flourish with Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir.
Just under the legal limit for "Brut" (with 11 grams of sugar per liter), this entry-level blend from Bernard and his daughter, Aurélie, is decadent and creamy on the palate. The Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir show-off in the glass with strawberry, candied flowers, and blood orange while Chardonnay adds that biscuit-y, savory edge on the palate. For $33, there's plenty to love about Lonclas and the small family-owned houses of Champagne, and that, in itself, is enough to celebrate!
