Spätburgunder is the name for Pinot Noir in Germany and August Kesseler has been a longtime champion of this varietal. We're in the Rhiengau region, on the eastern banks of the Rhine River, in a town called Assmannshausen. What's unusual about this village is that it specializes in Pinot (not Riesling). Its steep, quartzite-rich slopes rise-up steeply from the Rhine and transcend into seriously complex Pinots, ruby in color with aromas of cherries and blackberries, fresh mushrooms and a hint of sweet smoke.
