Champagne by Dom Pérignon | 2010
2010 was a challenging vintage in Champagne, and many of the big houses did not release a tête de cuvée. Vincent Chaperon, the chef de cave (cellar master) at Dom Pérignon, explains that despite a greatly reduced harvest, both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir reached the “third-highest sugar content of the last decade, very close to 2002 and 2003... and even more surprisingly, both grapes achieved the second highest level of acidity of the past decade, just after 2008." The final blend of the 2010 is an outlier, slightly Chardonnay forward (54%), rather than Pinot Noir (46%). On the front palate, the wine is soft and generous with lush orchard fruits, sourdough, and sappy citrus. Then, in classic "DP" style, it's got a mouthful of tension and energy on the backend. Drink and enjoy the 2010s now, while you hold onto the 2008s (and the 2002s if you're lucky!)
