Côte de Brouilly, Cuvée Melanie by Daniel Bouland | 2019
A beloved producer of old-fashioned Morgon, Daniel Bouland's wines seem to do the impossible — taste powerful, yet soft, all at the same time. He's the ultimate solo performance, working alone in his vineyards and cellar, perfecting the hearty old basics: hand-harvesting, super low yields, no sweetening of the must, old wood, wild yeast fermentations, no fining, and no filtration.
This bottling, Cuvée Melanie, comes from one parcel of 70+ year-old Gamay vines within a lieu-dit called, "Tête Noire," high-up in the hills of Côte de Brouilly. The soil is volcanic blue schist which gives the wine its glossy minerality. On the nose, the draws you in with purple flowers, blue stone crumble, and a lip gloss of brambly fruits. Then, in classic Bouland fashion, the palate is seductive — extra juicy, beyond silky, and bursting with color in every direction.
