Grüner Veltliner, Sonntag Geschlossen by Quantum | 2011
A collaboration between computer nerd (turned biodynamic farmer) Marcus Sonntag and talented winemaker, Florian Schuhmann of Quantum winery, this 2011 represents the first release to the United States. Aged 7-years in barrel, "Sonntag Geschlossen" ("Closed Sundays") is for the hardcore Grüner lover. It's a jackpot of savory flavors — water chestnut, caramelized fennel, leeks, and sweet leafy greens. The sensations on the nose pile-up on the palate, followed by perks of yellow and green apple, pear compote, and white cherry. Its texture, soft and creamy, is more reminiscent of a red wine (not white) with enough acidity to keep your palate intrigued for another glass. Serve between 50-54 F, and pair with zucchini fritters, Vietnamese summer rolls, or fish and chips.
