The Vault is Open! Sauvignon Blanc, Map Maker by Staete Landt | 2019
There's an ocean of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc out there, so it takes a little bit of skill and patience to catch a good one. Set in the region of Rapaura on the original Wairau River plain, Staete Landt is one of the best kept secrets in Marlborough. Unlike bigger commercial producers, they own 100% of their vineyards and take farming seriously. As a result, you won't find any of those green pea and grassy notes in their wines (typically a result of over-cropping and high yields). Their introductory "Map Maker" bottling reminds me of cooling-off with a tropical sorbet on a hot day — on the palate it's a rush of kaffir lime, passion fruit, and ruby grapefruit followed by a friendly attack of cold stone and high-wire acidity. The only question left is... beach or pool?
