Fair answer: supply and demand. There are roughly 2,500 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc planted in Sancerre. That’s 9.65 square miles — about four times the land area of Miami Shores. Think about that: Miami Shores x Four, supplying the world’s thirst for Sancerre Blanc. Suddenly, $30 feels less ridiculous.

The good thing is that Sancerre isn’t the Loire’s only source for mineral delight, icy Sauvignon Blanc. Appellations like Pouilly-Fumé, Quincy, and Menetou-Salon also specialize in the grape and are worth pursuing. Then, there are producers like Cyprien Perchaud, who make Val de Loire wines from vineyards living “across the street” from the precious, dotted lines of those appellations. Perchaud’s estate is in Sainte-Gemme-en-Sancerrois, Sancerre’s northernmost village, and this wine comes from grapes grown on the other side of the line. It flirts with riper colors like pink guava, lime curd, and passionfruit, but stays firmly Loire with brisk acidity and that stony icicle crunch. So good. Still French. Sancerre-ish is just fine. ~Allegra Angelo
