Nerello Mascalese is worth all the hype. On the volcanic slopes of Mt. Etna, winemakers face extreme viticulture and everything must be done by hand. In the 1980s pioneers like Salvo Foti and Benanti, paved the way for producers like Tenuta di Aglaea who cultivate Nerello on the cooler, north side of the volcano. As a result, their wines are powerfully red-fruited, but underneath the red fruits, the wines are Sicilian to-the-bone with notes of olive, licorice, blood orange, and sweet stone.
