Textures de Pedra by Raventós i Blanc | 2014
Family owned since 1497, Raventós i Blanc created a big wine splash in 2012 when they quit the Cava DO and established a new sparkling wine designation, Conca del Riu Anoia, with a focus on native varietals (no Pinot or Chardonnay!) and longer lees aging. Arguably one of the most compelling Spanish sparkling wines, Textures de Pedra is named after the highest point of the Raventós estate, where the soils are remarkably stony and the vines' roots dig deeply into the ground. As a result, the wines have a long coat of texture and a superfine minerality that pierces through all the layers of fruit and earth. A library release, this 2014 is an unusual blend of Xarel-lo, Xarel-lo Vermell (the rare, pink mutation), Sumoll, and Bastard Negre. It's exotic in the glass with tart red fruits and Asian spice, and hangs out for a while on the palate with tea leaf, dried flowers, and freshly turned earth.
