Zinfandel, Fredericks Vineyard by Turley | 2015

It's impossible to talk about California Zinfandel without mentioning Larry Turley. Before Turley became Turley, there was Napa's iconic Frog's Leap, which he co-founded in 1981. After developing an interest in the precious old vines of California, he split-off in 1993 to start Turley Wine Cellars. The Fredericks Vineyard, first planted in 1937, is a rare hillside site, 900 feet up, terraced along the Sonoma side of the Mayacamas mountains. As with all Turley vineyards, it is certified organic!

Underneath generosity and volume, Turley wines are essentially terroir wines, powered by old vines, and this 2015 is no exception. On the palate, it's a dynamic spiral of lush berries, peach pit, and kirsch, tethered by mountain air and crushed stone. It's big yet soft at the same time and its velvety texture carries the wine into an ultra-long finish, syncing perfectly with anything off the grill that has a nice char or salty crust.
