Wine Spotlight: Clément & Florian Berthier Sancerre, Les Chasseignes | 2018

A Vinya exclusive and fan-favorite, we can never have too much of Bethier's "Les Chasseignes" bottling. A common phrase in Sancerre, "Les Chasseignes" refers to a vineyard with limestone subsoils topped with smooth stones. Berthier’s kind rests in the northern fringe of the Sancerre appellation, in an area called “Sury-en-Vaux,” or Smile of the Valley. Here, drier conditions and slightly warmer temperatures make this subregion an oasis for Pinot Noir and deliciously over-the-top Sauvignon Blanc.

Aged in a combination of steel and old barrels, this stunning 2018 morphs Sauvignon's sharp green edges into soft and savory ones. More fennel-y than grassy, more creamy than sharp, it’s a terroir lover’s dream of unctuous stone and crystallized earth. Technically bone dry, but deceivingly almost salty and sweet, Clément and Florian Berthier remind us that top quality Sancerre can be as enchanting as a Grand Cru Chablis, just remember to swap the Chardonnay for Sauvignon Blanc (shh!)

Happy Drinking,
