Casa E. di Mirafiore Barolo | 2018

$50.00

Casa di E. Mirafiore has a glorious history. Founded in 1878 by Italy’s Royal Family, they popularized the Barolo nickname, “The King of Wines, the Wine of Kings,” and became one of the first estates to ship wine abroad. Today, the estate is owned by Oscar Farinetti, founder of Eataly, who has been a force in resurrecting languorous Piedmont brands, such as Borgogno and Fontanafredda. Under Farinetti’s direction, Mirafiore obtained organic certification in 2018 and recommenced production of its prestigious Crus (Lazzarito, Paiagallo). Just like the labels, the winemaking is traditional, with long fermentations and aging in large Slavonian casks.

Easily one of the best values in Piedmont, this is the perfect Barolo for enjoying now. Most of the fruit comes from the estate-owned vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba, arguably Barolo’s most prestigious commune known for its intensity yet sublime texture. It’s Barolo’s velvet glove. The 2018 vintage perfumes the glass with dark cherries, sandalwood, and truffle spice. On the palate, the fruit is sleek and juicy and nicely equalizes the persistency of the natural tannins. ~Allegra A
