Lights Out Cabernet
Founded in 2004 by the South Korean businessman, Hi Sang Lee, Dana Estates quickly skyrocketed to cult status with their opulent, single vineyard 100% Cabernets from Rutherford and Howell Mountain. Expressive and generous out of the bottle, the "Onda" bottling is a blend of these single vineyards which are farmed organically without a drop of irrigation. The backbone is Cabernet Sauvignon, but a dollup of Merlot and Petit Verdot smooth out the edges on the palate. Made by consulting winemaker extraordinaire, Philippe Melka, Onda represents the crème de la crème of Napa Valley with pristine red and blue fruits, scorched earth, and mulberry spice. It's decadent yet deceptively refreshing, powered by a plushness of minerality and perfectly ripe fruits, versus chewy oak or gritty tannins. This is the type of Cabernet you want to serve to a serious Cabernet drinker or someone like me, a globe trotting wine enthusiast, who appreciates the complex quirks of terroir over the color of a grape or the percentage of alcohol in the bottle.
