Anthony & David Girard Sancerre Florilège des Monts Damnés | 2018
Hunting for Minerality
If you’re a fan of minerality in white wines, then Anthony & David Girard’s Florilège des Monts Damnés will give you goosebumps. With its dramatic 45-degree slope and limestone terroir, Les Monts Damnés (The Hills of the Damned) is Sancerre’s greatest vineyard. Many top estates farm here, producing their most expensive bottlings which exude a minerality so rich and thick that the wines feel sweet while being chillingly bone dry.
Nearly impossible to find, Anthony & David Girard’s Florilège bottling comes from their oldest plots, aged in older barrels, which makes the wine move in waves and curls on the palate. With its eye-catching black and yellow label and wax top, it looks and plays the part of an over-the-top, grand white. It's as if you took a very good Sancerre, wrapped it in cheesecloth and squeezed out all its droplets of water. The result? A fine silk of crystals, iridescent with gold, yellow and green, platinum and white. That's minerality, and it's worth all the eggs in the basket.
Happy Drinking,
Allegra A
