The man behind Ca’n Verdura is Tomeu Llabrés, who founded the Ca’n Verdura winery over eleven years ago in a garage in the north central zone of Mallorca. Committed to low-impact farming and low-intervention winemaking, his efforts have fueled a local wine renaissance, which is breathing new life into the island’s native grapes: Moll, Mantonegro, Callet, and the super rare white, Giró Ros.
Ca Ses Rosetes is the nickname of Tomeu’s mother’s side of the family, and it’s his new white wine from a single, very windy vineyard of Giró Ros vines, located outside the village of Santa Maria del Camí in Mallorca. With less than 250 cases produced, this is as rare as it gets. When the grape reaches maturity, the skin shows off a pinkish grey color, and according to the researcher Pedro Balda, it is an ancestor of many red Mallorcan varieties, including Mantonegro, Fogoneu, and Callet. In the cellar spontaneous fermentation takes place in 500L French oak barrels (50% new) with native yeasts. Then, the wine is aged in the same 500L French oak barrels for eight months with conservative lees stirring occurring on select days in January. Tasting note coming soon! ~Allegra A
