I had the chance to meet Caroline Morey in San Francisco in 2016, when she was presenting the wines from her newly established Domaine. Since then, I've been fortunate to carry the wines with me. The daughter of Jean-Marc Morey and granddaughter of Albert Morey, she cultivates about seven hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the appellations of Chassagne-Montrachet, Santenay, and Beaune. Married to Pierre-Yves Colin she shares a winery with him but has developed her own personal style. Her viticulture emphasizes traditional farming and respect for old vines, while her cellar work is minimalist and precise, evident in this 2022 Beaune Premier Cru. Fermented partially with stems, the wine rests in 350L barrels with 20-30% new oak. Bottled with minimal filtration, the color is pale with a lithe profile of wild cherries, rose, and burnt orange baking spices. Then, the backbone of Les Grèves reveals itself with chalky, but fine, tannins that stretch out the finish. Pure terroir-loving Pinot, this is one of my favorite Morey, Caroline that is, bottlings. ~Allegra Angelo
