Casa E. di Mirafiore Barolo | 2019
Casa di E. Mirafiore, founded in 1878 by Italy’s Royal Family, popularized the Barolo nickname, The King of Wines, the Wine of Kings and became one of the first estates to ship wine abroad. Today, the estate is owned by Oscar Farinetti, the founder of Eataly, who has been a force in resurrecting languorous Piedmont brands, such as Borgogno and Fontanafredda. Under Farinetti’s direction, Mirafiore obtained organic certification in 2018 and recommenced production of its Crus: Lazzarito, Paiagallo. Just like the labels, the winemaking is traditional, with long fermentations and aging in large Slavonian casks. Easily one of the best values in Piedmont, this is the perfect Barolo for enjoying now. Most of the fruit comes from the estate-owned vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba and perfumes the glass with dark cherries, sandalwood, and truffle spice. On the palate, the fruit has a juicy character and nicely balances the persistency of the long-legged tannins. Drink now through 2035. ~Allegra A
