Clos Figueres Priorat | 2019

Clos Figueres comes from the original vineyard of the estate, purchased in the late 1990s by wine merchant extraordinaire, Christopher Cannan. In the 1980s, Christopher was very influential in exporting top Spanish wines to the United States, including Vega Sicilia. Influenced by the Priorat renaissance of the 1990s and his good friend, René Barbier of Clos Mogador, Chris set-out to resurrect old vineyards of Grenache and Carignan in Gratallops, along with planting Cabernet, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and by accident, Viognier. Bottled at 15.5% alcohol, this 2019 is a prime example of how elegance can live within power. It's not driven by oak or overripe fruit. Fermented and aged in 500L barrels, spirals of dark cherries and plums are like velvet. Creamy tannins extend an incredibly long finish, and the treasures of Gratallops' llicorella terroir unfolds with black jellybean, petrichor, and sweet leather. A total knockout for anyone looking for that big red with lots of personality. ~Allegra A
