André Pasdeloup Mercurey Rouge | 2021

The man behind Pasdeloup is Burgundy négociant Arnaud Baillot; the estate carries his wife’s family name, André Pasdeloup. I’ve approached the 2021 vintage Burgundies with caution, because many of them lean green, angular, and pathetically thin. This Mercurey does not. There’s a core of red fruit and sweet iron, while savory, woodland notes emerge too. It’s very good, and it reminds me of a soulful bistro red you stumble across in Paris and think about for weeks afterward (wishing you brought bottles back with you). At a time when even modest Bourgogne Rouge can feel overpriced, this is one of the best red Burgundy values I’ve had in a very long time. Get it while you can. ~Allegra Angelo
