This might be our nerdiest 3-pack yet: a rare mini-vertical of Domaine Pêcheur’s Poulsard—2023, 2024, and 2025—all beating with 12.5% alcohol. Poulsard is a wonderfully oddball French variety from the Jura region, making some of the lightest red wines on the planet. Barely any tannin, a little bark-like crunch, then poof. A rainbow with a mild attention span. It’s not for everyone.
The Domaine started with a single hectare in 1976, and today, Christian and Patricia Pêcheur run their family operation across a whopping eight. Welcome to the Jura: Burgundy’s less obedient distant neighbor. Cooler, wetter, and more extreme. You can feel the push-and-pull in the wines, reaching for ripeness without putting on weight. A region, also, where crunchy winemaking & funk tend to overlap, but Pêcheur remains classic. Completely destemmed, this expression of Poulsard was raised in steel & used 600-liter casks. Poulsard to-a-tee, its appearance is frail and wafer-thin, “Put some weight on your bones Poulsard!” (say the haters). But there’s no shortage of guts. It’s like drinking a forest with buckets of red berries, tree-hugger spices, and night fog. I’m tasting the 2025, right now, and I’m giddy. Who’s with me? 1, Uno, 3-pack available!!! ~Allegra Angelo
