Terre di Montalcino is a new project from well-known grower and maker Giancarlo Pacenti, in collaboration with Dalla Terra Imports. Pacenti’s mind-bendingly delicious Brunello wines come from his older vines—35+ years—while this wine (with its own name and label) comes from the younger stuff. But these young vines are hardly naïve and whiny. They’re Sangiovese selections from Pacenti’s original family vineyard (planted in the 1960s), then re-planted at high density, on cooler sites, destined for low yields. There’s character in this bottle, but it’s not a Brunello powerhouse. It’s more feathery than dense, gliding across the tongue with oodles of cherry and that hedonistic terra-cotta earthiness, which bleeds Montalcino heart & soul. Possibly your new FAVE house Brunello? That would be a very good choice. ~Allegra Angelo
