I’m not the biggest bubble nerd, but there’s something about Pinot Meunier-forward Champagne that hits differently. I remember the first time I tasted Les Vignes de Vrigny, Egly-Ouriet’s famous Meunier bottling— I could have sworn someone had snuck a drop of stunning Riesling into my glass. Meunier, a mutation of Pinot Noir, has a Riesling-esque spirit: the acid feels juicier, the fruit brighter, as it bounces across the mouth like a pink floatie. Then I tried Famille Moussé, formerly known as Moussé Fils. I was little late to the cool kids’ party and only started carrying the wines about three years ago, but it was the “L’Esquisse” slate blue label that grabbed me immediately. It was young, energetic, joie de vivre! Meunier and a hell of a lot less expensive than Egly. Plus, organically farmed? Uh, yes.

When I heard about Moussé’s devastating fire on July 26, my heart dipped, and I suddenly felt connected to a faraway place that I’ve never breathed. Reports are varied, but the facts are that the winery was destroyed and wine stocks were lost, though no volumes have been disclosed. Uncertainty, surely. So, instead of stashing our stock, we’re sharing it: a special Famille Moussé two-pack featuring two Meunier-forward bottlings that may never be… quite the same. 3 available.
