Val Sotillo by Bodegas Ismael Arroyo feels like Ribera del Duero from another era—family-grown, vineyard-led Tempranillo with no need for flashy packaging or gloss. The Arroyo family has made wine in Sotillo de la Ribera since the 1500s. Ismael Arroyo began bottling under the ValSotillo name in 1979 and was among the growers who helped establish the Ribera del Duero DO in 1982. Their version of flash? A 16th-century underground cellar: nearly 2,000 square meters of hand-carved stone galleries, naturally cool and made for slow, unhurried aging. Today, the family farms more than 70 acres across 12 parcels, much of it old-vine, bush-trained Tinta del País, without chemical sprays or herbicides. This Joven is miles above its category: black fruits, fruitcake spice, and that violet-rose sky earth that makes Tempranillo compelling. At 14%, it glides rather than hangs.
