Old vines aren’t automatically better. It depends on the variety, the site, the farming. But Gamay? There’s something magical about Gamay and old vines, as it slowly morphs into those knobby, chunky trunks, like goblets rising from the soil. There’s an undeniable lithe texture to old vine Gamay, sliding ever so silky across the palate with its bowl of berries and bite-sized flowers and fairy dust spice. In Beaujolais, 40–80 years is a respectable old vine, “Vieilles Vignes” range. So, when I tasted this bottle — from vines planted in 1903 — I had to confirm, “Wait… nothing’s been replanted?” Nothing. A mere 2 acres tended to since 1903, vines thriving in a loose soil composed of manganese-rich, pinkish granite. Living history in liquid form; a glass of wine that will gift you a moment of Wow! ~Allegra Angelo
