Clos Windsbuhl is a famous monopole site (one owner, one maker) owned by biodynamic maven, Domaine Zind-Humbrecht. Technically it is not a Grand Cru, but amongst terroir freaks, it is, located above the village of Hunawihr, showing off its bold and rocky Triassac limestone soils. The average age of the Riesling vines is beyond 60, with the soul of a punky teenager. Despite climate change, Windsbuhl remains one of the last sites to be harvested, standing under 13% alcohol and packing a punch of a 3.1 PH (super high acidity). Bone-chillingly dry, it cuts the palate like an icy winter breeze, bringing along pear, bitter grapefruit and lemon, sweet dew drops, and iridescent minerals. Energized out-of-the-gate, its gusto will carry it another 20 years, but wow is it fun to drink right now, showcasing Riesling as, perhaps, life's greatest translator of terroir. ~Allegra A
