Alto Piemonte, Sizzano by Monsecco | 2016

A new arrival, I couldn’t resist popping a bottle of this crushable Piedmontese “Nebb-Head” blend. A hidden jewel of the Neal Rosenthal portfolio, Monsecco was a fashionable estate in the 1970s, then brought back to life by the Zanetta family. This bottling is from Sizzano, a dot of an appellation in the Alto Piemonte, sandwiched on the right bank of the Sesia River between the wine regions of Ghemme and Fara. It's a lower lying region with glacial soils mixed with sands and clay. As a result, Nebbiolo, locally known as Spanna, shows a more plump, sensitive side with the help of the juicy red grapes, Uva Rara and Vespolina.

60% Spanna, fermented for a ridiculously long 6 months, followed by aging in large Slavonian botti and used French barriques, this 2016 is Piedmont to-the-bone without the big slap of tannin. On the nose, magnetic scents of wild berries, purple plums, and sweet Cuban cigar draw your nose into the glass. More juicy than austere, the wine spills over into all the crannies of your palate, and the warm and savory earth of Alto Piemonte cracks wide open. Ending with classic Nebbiolo pep and tang, you'll be craving another glass. So, this holiday, skip the lines in Barolo and Barbaresco, and shop the delicious outer limits of Alto Piemonte!

Happy Drinking,
Allegra A
