Named after an old County Road that was once a narrow path of dirt and stones, SP68 Rosso has become an irresistible, and dangerously gluggable, mini-cult wine amongst wine enthusiasts and sommeliers. Its gatekeeper is the ever-enchanting, Ariana Occhipinti, whose dazzling personality seems to leak into every drop of her wines. Her terroir, in the village of Vittoria, is an elevated reddish landscape of sands and weathered limestone. Here, Frappato (70%) squeezes out all the colors of red, a fragrant elixir of strawberries and cream. Then, Nero d’Avola (30%) adds-in darker shades with a fruitcake of black cherry, plum, and wintry spice. Aged in concrete and bottle unfiltered, the new vintage of SP68 Rosso is more refined than its previous, more funky versions. Maybe the evolution is the result of older vines or is the mark of a fiercely talented winemaker coming of age. Either way, it’s pure Sicilian deliciousness, any road you take it!
