Founded by the man who was responsible for bringing Vega Sicilia to the United States, Englishman Christopher Cannan purchased Clos Figueres in 1997 on the advice of René Barbier among others. A former resident of Bordeaux, Christopher now spends a majority of his time at Figueras, located just north of Priorat's jewel village, Gratallops. Font de la Figuera is a more ready-to-drink expression of the big daddy Clos Figueras, which uses younger vines of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon to add fruit and fleshiness to the schisty and sunbaked old vines of Grenache and Carignan. In the glass, an inky red color coats the palate in waves of velvet. Dark raspberries and plums fold into cocoa, wildflowers, molten rock, and licorice spice. If big red, without the makeup of oak, is your thing, then this is a total WOW-zer, just make sure to bring the meat. ~Allegra A
