This is as boutique as it gets. With less than 500 case made, De Boel is the ultimate passion project from husband-and-wife team, Nell and Arnaud de Boel who inherited a few plots of vines in the Northern Rhône. Nell is French, Arnaud is Belgium, and they met in 2009 in New Zealand. Bon Vivants at heart, their wines take the names from eras of Gastronomy. Ars Magirica means "Arts of the Chef" and refers to the first written cookbook by the 1st century Chef to the Emperor, Apicius. A tragic figure, Apicius took his life, when he could no longer afford the food to satisfy his gastronomic delights. Now, he has a Cornas named after him! Ars Magirica Cornas is the expression of a tiny 5-year-old vineyard of Syrah, directly west of the town of Cornas. Fermented in steel, then aged in a combination of used barrique and larger 600L barrels, this is a pretty Cornas with oodles of pitch-perfect purple fruit, smoky rose, and woodfire spices. This is the type of wine that begs for anything off-the-grill, meat or veggie. Syrah is one of those grapes that we forget how much we love it, until we drink it. And, super tasty Cornas for this price? It's simply non-existent. ~Allegra A
