Castello del Terriccio, owned by Vittorio Piozzo di Rosignano, spans almost 2,500 acres, making it the largest privately owned estate in Tuscany. Located north of Bolgheri and south of Livorno, it sits in a kind of Tuscan no-man’s-land, where its neighbor, the Tyrrhenian Sea, brings cool breezes, multiple microclimates, and an accordion of wildlife. The wines, ironically, feel close to the sea: outdoors-y, piney, sea salt & saline, with slim-fit tannins.
Since taking control of the estate, Vittorio has steered Terriccio into a new era, where elegance is the flex: longer, slower fermentations, larger-format oak replacing smaller barrels, and resting in concrete before bottling. The 2011 Lupicaia, mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, is in that perfect sweet spot where the fruit and earth melt together—the dark cherry and wild herbs, the purple spice and plum, blackberry and cigarette stone. Bottled in magnum, this is far from a flashy and loud Cabernet; it’s for the terroir-lovin’ enthusiast, who appreciates the magic of savory, and of course, a big bottle. ~Allegra A
