Tenuta di Collosorbo is a new but old story. Giovanna Ciaccia comes from a long lineage of Montalcino grape growers and olive farmers. She started Collosorbo in 1995, when her family’s 1850 estate (Tenuta di Sesta) split. Today, Giovanna manages her estate alongside her daughters and produces some of Montalcino’s most underrated and likeable wines.

Located in the northern zone of Montalcino, Collosorbo reflects the north’s softer style, due to the area’s calcareous clays and gentle plains. Sourced from 100% estate vineyards, long maceration and frequent pump-overs extract every drip of Sangiovese’s red fruited quality. Aged in a combination of old Slavonian and French oak barrels, the wine is perfectly plump, but far from chunky. Strawberry-balsamic, basil, dark cherry, and iron rose are just a few of the high notes. Bottled in magnum, 2018 is a supple vintage but gives plenty of dusty charm to please the classically trained, stickler enthusiast. And, of course, everything tastes better out of magnum. ~Allegra A
