Olga Raffault Chinon, Les Picasses | 2016
Les Picasses is one of Chinon's most prized vineyards, revered for its steep slopes, limestone soils, and magnificent old vines of Cabernet Franc. The famous Olga Raffault never made wine but was the estate's memorable owner. Today, it's overseen by her grandchildren, Sylvie and Eric de la Vigerie, who farm over 20 hectares of certified organic vines. Aged in large 3,000-liter casks for almost two years, this is the current release of Les Picasses. It represents the estate's oldest vines of Cabernet Franc, handled in the most traditional winemaking manner. Always more garnet than bright in the glass, it's a terroir lover's dream with its rustic red fruits, stony earth, and lavender spice. The tannins are firm, yet cushiony, and extend the finish to extra-long. A benchmark of Chinon, it's hard to top Les Picasses, especially when it's Olga Raffault. ~Allegra A
