Share A Glass With: Julien Fayard

Julien Fayard’s experience in wine is madly impressive. Born in Saint-Étienne, France, he made his first wine at sixteen, then went on to train in Bordeaux with prestigious stints at Château Lafite-Rothschild and Château Smith Haut Lafitte. After a first visit to California in 2000, he returned in 2003 as a harvest intern at Quintessa—where he met (and quickly clicked with) Philippe Melka. That connection turned into an eight-year run at Atelier Melka, where Julien helped lead vineyard and winemaking work for Lail, Gemstone, and Dalla Valle. With credentials like a master’s in winemaking form France, a second master’s in agri-business, and an MBA from UC Davis, he’s essentially a Swiss Army knife of wine. In 2007, Julien released his first Napa wine, Azur Rosé, inspired by the fresh, cloud-like Provence styles. A few years later, he and his partners planted their flag in Coombsville, building a next-level wine cave that now anchors multiple projects, including Covert and his namesake label, Julien Fayard.
