Walter Scott Chardonnay, La Combe Verte | 2022
Walter Scott Chardonnay, La Combe Verte | 2022
It’s not Burgundy, but it's a pretty imposter. La Combe Verte by Walter Scott is Erica Landon and Ken Pahlow's entry-level expression of Chardonnay (with 2% Aligoté) from the Eola-Amity Hills sub-region of Willamette Valley. Gently pressed with whole clusters intact, the wine ferments in 350L and 500L French Oak barrels, then completes full malolactic fermentation. Resting in 20% new oak, with minimal stirring of the lees, the result is a wonderful snapshot of mineral-high Chardonnay, showcasing precision and mystique. On the nose, smoky chestnut and hazelnut are reminiscent of a tight-knit Meursault, followed by luscious green apple, pear, and quince. The palate is alive with zing and zap, and a sweet lemony acidity rolls out into a cozy finish. For an entry-level bottling, this is top-level from beginning to end, and considering the price, it’s a total bargain (shh!) ~Allegra A
